New Zealand

JOSH is based in Auckland, so New Zealand is the country I know best. The free guide Before You Fly uses it as the worked example.

Check that a provider meets the Tertiary and International Learners Code of Practice, and read the visa rules on the Immigration New Zealand student visa news page.

Australia

Courses and providers across Australia. Visa and work rules differ from New Zealand's, so each student's situation is checked on the official Australian pages.

Start with Study Australia and the Home Affairs Student visa page. Check a provider and its courses are registered on the CRICOS register.

Why vocational courses

Vocational courses train you for a particular kind of work, and many include practical learning. That can make it easier to gain experience in your field while you study and after you finish.

No course can guarantee a job. Results depend on the course, the provider, your visa conditions and the job market. Ask each provider for evidence, not promises.

Three questions to ask every provider

  • Is the provider approved?Check the official register in the country where you will study.
  • Where does the course lead?Ask which jobs or further study graduates go on to, and how the provider knows.
  • Is there practical learning?Ask about work placements or workplace training, and whether your visa allows them.
